There are 4 parts of skill leveling in Bannerlord: XP, Perks, Attribute Points, and Focus Point. XP is gained passively by doing relevant things. Perks are unlocked at thresholds, and often provide noticeable boosts. Attribute points increase learning limit in relevant skills. Focus points increase the rate at which you get xp.

trade seems to level up as long as you sell an item for profit so its purely a numbers game go buy items for cheap like flax,grapes, olives and grain and sell in bulk. Just go from city to city winning tournaments while buying best priced items and selling the ones that give you profit, easy peasy.
